Temporomandibular (TMJ) Disorder Treatments in Ottawa
Regaining normal jaw movement
Jaw joints are the most used joints in your body: these joints allow you to breathe, talk, yawn and chew. The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located in front of the ear, which is why a TMJ disorder will cause facial pain, jaw pain, headaches or earaches.
Other symptoms that you will recognize:
-
Pain and pressure behind the eyes
-
Clicking or popping sound when opening or closing the mouth
-
Locked jaw
-
Jaw goes out of place
-
Tenderness of the jaw muscles
-
Face swelling
Although the cause of the problem is not clear, professionals generally attribute it to:
-
Teeth grinding or clenching
-
Tightening of facial or jaw muscles due to stress
-
Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the temporomandibular joints
-
Jaw or neck injury
-
Dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket of the jaw
If you've been diagnosed with TMJ, a certified physiotherapist at Ottawa Carleton Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Center can help you.
